Dan Cammish:
“It’s a really good result and we’ve improved throughout the weekend. The speed we pulled away from the guys in third and fourth showed that we could push on old tyres. It was a pretty relentless pace, it was hard work doing 34 laps, with 20 of those like qualifying laps in the middle there. Mentally it was draining as well as physically but that’s why we are on the podium every week.
“I had something left in the tank after that race. Charlie gave a good chase but I managed to get the gap. It was negated by the safety car but I always knew I had enough left in the car and in the tyres, as well as myself. If I needed it I knew I could go again. Dino had new tyres so I knew I had a little left just in case he did get past Charlie and I had another gear to go to if I needed it. Thankfully I didn’t need it and we’re happy that the Redline team got a one-two. The defence starts here!”
Daniel Cammish secured two lights to flag victories in the opening races of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB season at Brands Hatch.
The back-to-back champion started both races from pole position, however, safety car appearances in both races made the job less than straight-forward. Race one got underway with the now traditional rolling start and Dan got a good start to lead team-mate Charlie Eastwood. An incident further down the pack at the first corner lead to the first safety car of the day. Dan was able to get another good start when racing recommenced, Eastwood however was never too far away. The pair broke away from the pack, running nose to tail for the middle portion of the race.
A second safety car was required on lap 21 after a back-marker spun out but Dan was once again able to get the jump as the race restarted. At the end of a measured drive, he crossed the line to take victory by just over half a second from his team-mate.
Dan once again got a good start to race two in the Nationwide Crash Repair/PPG-backed machine. This time he was able to build a comfortable lead to the rest. Eastwood fell back as Dino Zamparelli harried him, allowing Dan to build a three-second lead. The final safety car of the day was required in the dying stages of the race however setting up a seven-lap sprint to the flag. Dan was not troubled though and brought the car home to a second victory and the championship lead.
The championship now moves to Donington Park for rounds three and four on the 15th & 16th of April. The Carrera Cup has not raced at the Leicester circuit since 2014 and will hold one 23 lap race and one 33 lap race as the drivers prepare for Le Mans.
