Dan Cammish:
“It was good to start 20th and finish fourth. I think we could have had third but Dino put up a good defence. He’s really experienced and I think the last person he wants to see in his mirrors was me. He gave up going forward as soon as I got there and just defended for his life. I couldn’t go through him.
“The weekend they’ve had was worse than the weekend I started with, so to come away with second and fourth is a mega result. I almost wrote the weekend off when I was stood at the side of the track in qualifying. As a damage limitation exercise it’s not bad at all. I’m going away on a high, we lost a few points to Charlie and he’s had a great day but I’ll be back at Oulton.”
Daniel Cammish once again demonstrated his supreme driving ability to finish fourth overall at Donington Park, despite having started in a lowly 20th position.
Dan was relegated to the back of the grid when he was unable to set a time after a difficult qualifying session. This set up a fantastic race however as the double champion set about catching the leaders over the 25-minute timed race. The race was delayed and truncated from the planned 40-minutes due to an incident in an earlier race, but that just made Dan’s achievements all the more impressive.
The standing start race got underway and Dan was able to finish the first lap in 14th position, having jumped a number of the ProAm2 runners. From there, it was a relentless assault on his fellow drivers as he moved through the field. The distinctively liveried Nationwide Crash Repair/PPG-backed car was easy to spot as the orange bonnet was clearly visible not only to the spectators but his rivals. By the end of lap two, he was up to tenth and on the tail of the leading pack with Dan filling their mirrors. Over the next few laps, he dismissed one driver a lap to move up to fifth place, setting the fastest lap in the process.
Team-mate Charlie Eastwood’s lead over the rest was such that Dan’s best chance was second place with Plato, Oliphant and Zamparelli bunched together. Oliphant ran wide at McLean’s and dropped to sixth, making Dan’s job a little bit easier. Zamparelli was next in line but he defended well and with time running out Dan was denied a second podium finish of the weekend.
Incredibly, Dan is now second in the championship, only four points behind Eastwood. The championship now heads to the Cheshire circuit of Oulton Park for round five and six on the 20th and 21st of May.
